Clouds on Cardboard This tiny cloud painting was experiment. I knew that some masters have used cardboard for their paintings and I was curious how oil paint would respond to cardboard that wasn't sealed or primed. You can see how the cardboard absorbed the oil leaving the distinctive brush strokes of pigament. I found it somewhat difficult because the oil lost it fluidity but I will be trying this experiment again. 

First Clouds This is the painting that I painted on my first day in my new studio. It was the first time I had painted with oil paint in years. I feel compelled to paint clouds mostly because of the severe drought we are experiencing. I find myself craving water, clouds and most of all rain.

Clouds This painting is on a large canvas. I experimented with using short brush strokes. I also wanted to have a minimal separation between the value of the sky and the value of the clouds. Like many of my paintings this was another instance in which I wanted to learn.

Cloud Sketch Clouds are very difficult to capture. When you paint them from life you have only a few minutes to capture the color, light and shadow. One of the things that is the most challenging is that they are changing subtlety as you work. I do these quick chalk sketches to help train my eye and my hand to capture the image quickly.
