Welcome to My Studio
From the time I could hold a pencil I began drawing. I drew chalk turtles and butterflies on the sidewalk. I adorned the margins of school papers with flowers, horses and elaborate patterns. There has never been a moment when I wasn't an artist. Many times in my life, for years at a time, I've forgotten that essential fact. After years of forgetting, which is easy to do when working in Corporate America, I'm remembering what it means to make art and be an artist.
I am a keen observer of the world around me and I interpret that using different media. In school I studied graphic design, reproduction and dry media. I also learned about textile design, architecture and photography. Later I taught myself to paint and sculpt.
At the beginning of this year I made an affirmative decision to devote more time to my art. I began with a project to do something artistic for 15 minutes a day. By February I was ready to move into my own studio. It was serendipitous that my friend Jacqueline was moving out of a studio that was perfect for me. So I have begun my life as a full time artist. I go to my studio daily and take an hour lunch break, just as I would if I worked in an office. Now I am remembering, after years trapped in the corporate feedback loop, what I really care about and who I really am. It may look like an easel and an empty wall but for me it represents a revolution and a new life.
