The World According to Poetry #22
Endless Summer
By Stephanie Wood Miller © 2019
Here dry earth
Spreads creaky wings
Brown parched grass
Begs for spring rain
Burning sun blisters tender shoots
And laps up waiting water
Even from down deep roots
Trees swoon and moan
Vegetables languish and wilt
Summer marches into fall
Unwelcome here
Dead dry leaves
Clatter to streets
Crush and scatter as dust
Remind of a season that will not pass
Rumors of rain
Reach us
Under a cloudless sky
Warm winds sweep the sidewalks
And fills our eyes with dust
We mistake desperation for wildness
Temporary reprieve from our relentless thirst
We would splash tears on doorposts and lintels
For this to pass over
But our eyes are dry
