Don't Fence Me In
Fences, according to Robert Frost, make good neighbors. Fences are intended to keep things in, and also to keep things out. Think about all the signs on fences — “Keep Out,” “Beware of Dog,”or“Welcome.” Walls are a sign of conflict and a sign of safety. Are they friendly or forbidding? What is this fence keeping in, or out? What else can a fence be? What would happen if you tore it down? Write and poem, song or story about things that you try to keep out or let in. Draw what’s outside the fence or inside the yard.
