The World According to Poetry #31

The Farmer’s Wife

By Stephanie Miller

He is husband to that land

Knows her ways, weaknesses and hard rows

Down to soft soil

Black as night, warm as the moon

He digs

He feels her quality

Making beds in her luscious loam

Careful to judge when to water and when to amend

She responds

Sending seedlings

Then buds and blooms

Thankful for his tender attention

At last she rewards him

Giving from her subterranean strength

A whole harvest

Her random gifts

Perennial fruit

Of long time lovers

Note: This poem is dedicated to my husband.
